
What Are Viral Rashes?
Viral rashes are skin eruptions or spots that appear as a symptom of a viral infection. They are common in babies and young children because their immune systems are still developing. These rashes often appear along with other symptoms like fever, runny nose, cough, or irritability.
Common Causes of Viral Rashes in Babies
- Roseola (Sixth Disease)
- Caused by: Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6)
- Symptoms: High fever for 2-3 days, followed by a pinkish rash on the body and neck after the fever subsides.
- Chickenpox (Varicella)
- Caused by: Varicella-zoster virus
- Symptoms: Itchy, fluid-filled blisters on the body, fever, fatigue.
- Measles (Rubeola)
- Caused by: Measles virus
- Symptoms: Fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, followed by a red, blotchy rash starting on the face and spreading.
- Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD)
- Caused by: Coxsackievirus
- Symptoms: Fever, painful sores in the mouth, and red spots or blisters on the hands, feet, and sometimes the buttocks.
- Rubella (German Measles)
- Caused by: Rubella virus
- Symptoms: Mild fever, swollen glands, and a pink rash starting on the face and spreading downward.
- Erythema Infectiosum (Fifth Disease)
- Caused by: Parvovirus B19
- Symptoms: “Slapped cheek” appearance on the face, followed by a lace-like rash on the body.
When to See a Doctor
Seek medical attention if:
✅ The baby has a high fever that won’t go down
✅ The rash is accompanied by difficulty breathing, severe irritability, or drowsiness
✅ The rash spreads rapidly or looks like bruises or blisters
✅ The baby is not feeding well or shows signs of dehydration.
